The Challenge:

Beaver Local High School struggled with a chronic problem of wear and overcompaction on their football field, with the result that many games were played on dirt or mud. Re-seeding after the season provided little relief, because the new turf never became sufficiently rooted to support a season’s games.

By re-sodding only the worn, high-traffic areas in the middle of the field, Sportscape provided a surface which gave the school the benefits of a new field at a fraction of the cost of a total re-sodding project.

The Solution:

Sportscape applied a technique called “strip-sodding,” installing quality sod on the heavily worn center section of the field. This method replaced only the area most affected by heavy traffic at much less than the cost of sodding the entire field.

The Result:

The strip-sodded field supported a full season of competition without reverting to the muddy conditions encountered previously. This technique proved so successful that it has since been used on problem areas like benches of football fields and in front of goals on soccer fields. It is particularly useful on the bench areas of facilities used both for football and for soccer, which are often on the playing surface of the soccer field.
