Reconstruction of Baseball and Softball Fields

Warren_MI.jpg (23309 bytes)
Three fields at Warren Consolidated Schools were
reconstructed to improve drainage and upgrade the
playing surface. Here the Sportscape crew is raising
the elevation in right field of one of the baseball diamonds
to eliminate the problem of standing water.

Reconstructing three fields (two baseball and one softball) for the Warren Consolidated School District turned out to be one of the biggest challenges of Sportscape of Michigan's first year. The fields had skinned (dirt) infields, with unacceptable-quality skinned area soil. Right field on one diamond was so low that it affected playability, and the softball field had a skinned area that was too large – the size of a baseball infield.

The Solution:

The two baseball field infields were converted from dirt to grass surfaces. The third diamond was converted for softball-only use, with much of the former skinned area replaced with topsoil and seeded. The skinned area soil was removed and replaced with a higher-quality skin soil mix imported from Canada and sometimes used on professional and collegiate diamonds.

Sod was installed on the infields and foul territories of the baseball fields, and right field of one baseball diamond was raised 14" to 18" to prevent standing water.

The warning track material on the baseball fields was removed and upgraded, and a warning track was constructed on the softball field. New fences and automatic irrigation systems were installed on all three fields, and roofs were installed on the dugouts.

The Results:

The district’s baseball and softball teams now have new, more uniform playing surfaces that provide more dependable ball response and stand up to all kinds of weather conditions.
